MALLORCA

The largest of the Balearic Islands in the western Mediterranean is Mallorca, with the capital Palma de Mallorca in the southwest part of the island with close to half of the island's population living there. The island has 3640 square km2 and a population of 790,800 inhabitants.

With the airport on the east side of the city.

The high mountain range is the Puig Major reaching 1445 meters above sea level and is situated along the northwest coast, which protects the island from the colder north winds and gives the island a milder climate.

In this area is the wellknown and beautiful cities Sóller and Portde Sóller. A lot of famous musicians and actors have found their paradise in these towns.

The island is a platform of limestone, which produces stalagmites and stalactites in the surrounding mountain caves, mostly on the southeast coast.

The farmers are also a big part of the island's income with no industry on the island except producers of wine, liquor, olive oil, textile and leather, including paper, glassware,

and ceramics.

South west is Andratx and Port d Andratx, the later one with its harbor and exclusive properties in the mountains surrounding the city.

In the Southeast region are the lower mountains (500-600 meters).

In between the mountains is farmland with fruits, vegetables and flowers.

The islands climate and beautiful nature makes it an attractive place for both tourists and property owners.

South of the island are the big cities with the beaches Palmanova and Magaluf.

Alcúdia in the north is also very popular amongst the tourists, especially amongst the Scandinavians.

The town has an older part with buildings from the 1600 century and in front a newer

part which stretches out more than 10 km along the sea line.

Most known landmarks are the gothic cathedral which was built between 1230 and

1601. The Moorish castle that later became the Kings castle Almudaina and the stockmarket exchange, La Lonja from the 1400 century, is now an art museum.

Since the tourism started at Mallorca the island has got a new character, better

infrastructure, and the business is growing in the tourism sector.

It is today one of the most visited places around the Mediterranean, with a

busy airport with direct flights to most of European countries.
